The Costa del Sol (English: Sun Coast) is a region in the south of Spain, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, comprising the coastal towns and communities along the Mediterranean coastline of the Málaga province and the eastern edge of the Cádiz province.

Formerly made up only of a series of small, quiet fishing settlements, the region has been completely transformed during the latter part of the 20th century into a tourist destination of world renown, with a near-continuous urban agglomeration of high-rise settlements and resorts running along the length of the coastline.

Here are some details of its major tourist cities:

Benalmadena

Lying a short distance south west of Malaga airport between the famous resorts of Torremolinos and Fuengirola, Benalmadena has plenty to offer the whole spectrum of visitor types.

Calahonda

Calahonda belongs to the municipality of Mijas. Rural flavour and coastal lifestyle are two of Calahonda's most attractive features, because, although the area is developed, its founder was keen on green areas, large plots and limits on apartment buildings. Thus, the area has grown in a generally peaceful and rustic fashion.

Casares

Casares is a picture postcard village with a population of just three thousand. To say that Casares is beautiful is an understatement. Most of the white villages are beautiful but there is something very special about the sight of Casares that causes the visitor to park the car and simply stare or take a photo.

Estepona

Estepona is the most westerly resort of the Costa del Sol. It has avoided too many of the high rise blocks of many of the other resorts and is an ideal choice for those people looking for a quiet holiday.

Fuengirola

The third major high rise resort heading south from Malaga, Fuengirola is especially popular with British tourists of all ages especially families and middle aged groups.

La Duquesa

La Duquesa enjoys an advantageous location to the west of Marbella sometimes called "the Other Costa del Sol". The area retains a vast amount of unspoiled natural scenery and authentic local character - while sharing the fantastic climate and all the excellent services and infrastructure of the rest of the Costa del Sol. Major features are a sports marina qnd an 18 hole golf course.

Malaga

Malaga is the stepping stone to the Costa del Sol. Relatively few visitors visit the city as they rush from the airport to their holiday resort. In doing so they miss a gem of a city with a fascinating old quarter next to a Roman theatre and Moorish palace, a commercial centre with first class shopping and a vibrant social life.

Marbella

Famous as a playground of the rich and famous, Marbella is now accessible to many who swarm south to enjoy the Spanish sunshine and the world class golf courses of the Costa del Golf.

Mijas

Mijas Pueblo stands high up the mountain above the coastal resorts and is a popular ½ day excursion from the Costa del Sol whilst Mijas Costa is the resort on the coast below which attracts mass tourism to its many attractions.

Nerja

Nerja is the most easterly resort of the Costa del Sol which still somehow maintains a reputation as a quaint village. This is no longer the case as the inevitable tourist developments have transformed the town into a thriving resort but without the high rise excesses of the western Costa del Sol.

Nueva Andalucia

Nueva Andalucia is a well thought out and attractive area just west of Marbella where, as its name suggests, the villas and apartments are based on traditional Andalusian architecture and design.

Puerto Banus

The focal point of Puerto Banus is the marina. It has berths for 915 boats, including those of the King of Saudi Arabia and several of the world's wealthiest individuals. Behind the harbour lie streets filled with bars, boutiques and nightclubs. Behind the main square is a vast El Corte Inglés department store.

Although the superstars have moved to more private destinations, visitors to 'The Port' (as it is known by locals) tend to be extremely wealthy tourists from northern Europe (especially UK and Germany), and Arabs (especially from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia) as well as holiday-making Spaniards.

San Pedro de Alcantara

San Pedro de Alcantara an appealing Andalucian Pueblo was once famous for it’s sugar cane and is traditionally a farming community. Today San Pedro is a busy coastal town only minutes away from the Sierra de Ronda mountain range. Located just 10km west of Marbella where trendy shops and nightlife are within easy reach

Torremolinos

During the 1950s and 60s Torremolinos was converted from a quaint fishing village into the Costa del Sol's original tourist resort. Today it is a concrete jungle but with fine beaches and ample accommodation it has plenty to offer.

Costa del Sol Excursions

There are lots of full day excursions from the resorts of the Costa del Sol. The most exciting ones include visits to Granada, Seville, Cordoba or Ronda. Also very popular are shopping trips to Gibraltar and a day excursion to Tangier in Morocco on which you travel across the Straits of Gibraltar by high speed catamaran to Africa.
