The Costa Calida is located in the southeast corner of Spain and incorporates the famous La Manga Club which is widely regarded as being one of Europe's top tourist complexes. The coastline to the south of La Manga was largely overlooked by foreign tourists until relatively recently. But the combination of low cost housing and year-round sunshine (Calida means hot) are now proving powerful magnets for international holidaymakers.

The average annual temperature here is 20C, the area has less than 40 days of rain a year and the sea temperature rarely falls below 18C. The Costa Calida is easily accessed by air - foreign visitors fly into Murcia's San Javier airport or the major international airport of Alicante, an hour's drive to the north.

Murcia

Murcia is both the region containing the Costa Calida and the capital city of that region.

The region of Murcia is not only known for its beautiful beaches, but also for a great number of natural beauties still to be discovered. It is precisely its natural charms and contrasts that makes Murcia outstanding from other regions. Natural open spaces that look like the most desolate deserts share common ground with lush fertile green lands like the valley of Segura and the valley of Guadaletin: modern residential neighbourhoods reaching out to connect with small medieval towns.

Embedded in between parts of the mountains of the Sierra de Orihuela and the Cresta de Gallo lies Murcia, the city. The Cathedral de Santa Maria is well worth a visit.

Murcia is very famous for its vegetables. This aspect has helped its gastronomy become very popular with a rich balanced Mediterranean diet of stews, salads, baked meat and rice dishes. And its proximity to the sea also gives it its rich culinary seafood delicacies.

La Manga

La Manga has more than 40km of beaches and the unique possibility of choosing between two seas with very different water temperatures, one with waves and one practically calm all year long. The number of hotels at La Manga make up 50% of the total hotels in the region.

La Manga Club, one of the world's finest all-round sports and leisure resorts, is located here. No matter what time of year you choose to visit, there are plenty of things to keep you entertained and busy, always with the assurance of five-star facilities and service.

You will find a seemingly endless variety of activities: golf, tennis, spa, swimming, fitness, squash, paddle tennis, cricket, professional football, lawn balls, pitch & putt, crazy golf, mountain biking, jogging and walking routes, beach, water sports, horse riding, go-karting, cultural tours, shopping, over 20 restaurants and bars, lively nightlife...

La Manga Club offers two distinct types of deluxe accommodation: the refinement of the five-star Hyatt Regency La Manga hotel and superb four-star self-catering accommodation at Hyatt Las Lomas Village.

Spread around a splendid 18 hole golf course designed by Nicklaus Design, La Torre Golf Resort has a total of 2,634 homes of different characteristics: villas , terraced houses and luxury apartments, spread out within an enclosed perimeter.

This vast extension guarantees a large open space that increases the feeling of tranquillity. Furthermore, this is supported by careful attention to landscape, developed by EDSA, the leading American company in designing tourist complexes all over the world.

Los Alcazares

The lovely Costa Calida town of Los Alcazares is located just off the N332 coastal road between Cartagena and San Javier, lapped by the tranquil, warm waters of the Mar Menor.

Its fine beaches attract holidaymakers from all over the world. The Spanish people themselves love this part of the coast and head here from cities like Murcia during the hot summer months.

Los Alcazares today is a busy tourist resort with a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants, and some fine beaches. It is a popular spot for water sports and the Mar Menor is a haven for all types of such sports including windsurfing, sailing, jet-skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling and swimming. There are several nearby golf courses.

Mar de Cristal

Mar De Cristal is located on the Mar Menor, a naturally formed lagoon consisting of some of the finest beaches in the whole of Spain.

Mar de Cristal is well renowned for its blue, clear waters. The local towns are Los Belones and El Algar and of course the historic town of Cartagena.

For nature lovers, nearby lies a protected nature reserve. The reserve incorporates sand banks, cliff tops, sandy beaches, and salt flats. This area symbolises the untouched coastline areas along the Mediterranean.

Mar Menor

Mar Menor (Little Sea) is a unique area located just above the city of Cartagena. Few regions have the good fortune to have both a saltwater lake and a Mediterranean shore.

The region of Murcia has both and the salt water lake with an area of 170sq.km is known as Mar Menor, the largest salt water lake in Europe.

The area dates back to prehistoric times but most remains found date from the Roman and Arabic periods. The Romans valued the area highly and developed a valuable salt industry. It was about 1000 years ago that the lake took on the appearance it has today.

The coast of the Mar Menor is flanked by small towns, in the past homes to fishermen and today, tourist enclaves. San Pedro del Pinatar in the north has 15,200 inhabitants. This can swell to 60,000 in the summer months. Below this is San Javier with over 20,000 residents.

The area offers several golf courses, municipal parks and the famous resort of La Manga. With so much water here there is no wonder that the area is a haven for water sports. The possibilities here are endless from sailing to diving, windsurfing and jet skiing.

Mazarron

The Mazarrón coast forms part of the Costa Calida.

In some parts, the mountains go right down to the sea, providing breathtaking panaramas but also forming small, often sandy and secluded coves. There are numerous beaches, some shingle, some rocky but many are sandy including the immense beaches near the port, Bahía and Bolnuevo.

The sea is usually around 5º warmer due to the unique 'micro climate' that Mazarrón enjoys. There are two reasons for this. One is, the mountain ranges which surround us and secondly, the cooler water currents which enter the Mediterranean from the Atlantic are deflected away from the coastline, leaving the water temperature unaffected and actually permitting diving all year round.

The water is usually clear and the depth of visibility in many places is often around 25 - 30 metres. Rocky outcrops provide incredible underwater scenery and apart from diving, snorkelling is extremely popular as well.
